Using an online portfolio to showcase your skills and career experience can help increase your social footprint among peers. While portfolios can take many names, blogs, websites, LinkedIn profiles and more can all serve as valuable sources of reputation building when monitored and built up in a thoughtful and deliberate manner. If you have a personal blog, devote a good deal of page space to the trickier issues in your field. Delve into the hurdles and strategies for overcoming the obstacles as a way of helping others who are facing similar scenarios.Publishing longer articles on timely topics that related to your work is also an excellent way to gain positive professional attention. Articles can also serve double duty if you keep an eye out for print or larger online publications that are soliciting for content in your area of expertise. Be cautious before submitting articles in these arenas, however, as many have republication or previous publication guidelines and restrictions you should be aware of. An Online Portfolio is a Living DocumentEach of the above steps will start to impact your job prospects, increasing the likelihood that your advice is shared or that your columns (and name) are returned in any web searches on your topic of choice. Professionals in your given field will often affirmatively look for resources on topics or may have Google or other search alerts set up to help them keep up with the most recent developments.Sharing links to your portfolio as a whole or the individual contributions within it on social media can also help keep people engaging with your ideas. As news breaks, laws, regulations or best practices change, stay on top of these movements in your industry by updating your living portfolio. This can help show progression and is also a valuable resource for yourself and others. Remember that you can always remove select old items as they become outdated, but dont rush to throw out information simply because of age.Showcase Personality and Soft SkillsIn todays competitive job market, it often isnt enough to simply have the education and experience necessary to meet the qualifications in the job description. Employers are looking for the best possible candidate for their open listing. With the guidance of HR professionals and a greater degree of understanding about the value of soft skills, hiring managers like to get a sense of a candidates personality and ability to work within a gruppe environment.Maintaining an online portfolio can help hiring decision makers to assess your personality. Online portfolios are certainly expressions of your best work, but they are often far less formal than more traditional resumes or cover letters. That ability for self-expression makes online portfolio critical to both job seekers and those in need of talented, well-rounded employees. With the dynamic function and innumerable benefits they may have, online portfolios are handy tools to keep in your job-seeking arsenal. Once youve established an online home for your professional career, be sure to maintain it, linking to the website or resource in your resumes, cover letters, and applications. Plus, youll have a handy-dandy link to share or pull up when your super creative pottery friend starts to show off their newest masterpiece.

5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your boss

5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your boss5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your bossWhen JaNaea Modest of Champaign, Illinois, went to a job fair at a middle school on her lunch break, she thought she was doing everything right. She changed her clothes, headed over, filled out the application and returned to work, assuming no one would be the wiser.Little did she know a local TV news crew was filming the event, and she ended up literally broadcasting her job-hunting intentions to her current employer. If you, too, are thinking about finding a new job, the time may be right. The near-record unemployment rate presents the ideal conditions for looking for a new schauplatz that will boost your salary and/or your responsibilities. In fact, one survey finds that nearly 60% of employees say they would jump ship due to a more appealing offer. But even if something better is around the corner, you dont want to tip your hand to your current employer that you are looking. And wh ile Modests scenario is rare, fortunately, it is still important to cover your tracks when youre job hunting while already employed. Here are five tips to help you hunt for a job on the sly (and watch for TV cameras).Use LinkedIn discreetlyYour first stop will probably be to spruce up your LinkedIn profile and thats smart, but you want to make sure leid to be overly obvious with your online tracks, says Wayne Breitbarth, author of The Power Formula for LinkedIn Success Kick-start Your Business, Brand and Job Search. If in the past youve used your LinkedIn account sparingly and all of a sudden theres a flurry of activity, that could present a big red flag to your boss. But theres an easy way to avoid sending a notice every time you make a change. Just go to your Settings and Privacy and in the Privacy menu, make sure the Sharing profile edits button in the How others see your LinkedIn activity menu is toggled over to No. That will turn off the notifications to your network about the pr ofile changes you are making and you can update your profile as much as you like. Also, Breitbarth recommends you make the most of the platforms job-assistance capabilities by setting your career interest preferences in the LinkedIn Jobs Tab setting up job search alerts and following companies, where youll be notified of job postings and employment changes at the company.Work with a recruiterNot only do industry-specific recruiters often have a line on jobs not readily detected, but they can also discreetly send out messages on your behalf. Recruiters are used to maintaining confidentiality during the search and are well versed in how to contact you at work without raising suspicion, says career coach Toni Patterson. They will also know which companies to avoid - which can be hard to decipher in some blind job postings - and then relay your confidentiality concerns to kompetenz employers.Interview on the sly.You dont have to end up on the TV news to have people in the office wonder about your interview plans. Dress and timing are the two places youre most likely to slip up, says Debra Boggs, co-founder of DS Professional Coaching.First, avoid coming to work overdressed. Instead she recommends leaving a pressed suit or dress in a garment bag in your car - drape it flat on the seat, not hanging up where everyone will notice it walking by - and leaving early enough to calmly change and freshen up in a public restroom, one that is neither at the interview location or your current office. And then make sure you take ample time for the meeting, reminds Boggs. If youre interviewing with more than one person, try to take a half day off and not squeeze it into the middle of the day, she advises. That way, you can be flexible if the company wants to extend your interview or have you meet additional people. And of course, then you wont feel rushed traveling to the interview site and can arrive on time, calm and organized when you walk in.Another option would be to sched ule it near the end of the day when you wont have to head back to the office, suggests Patterson. But be careful about having too many doctors appointments, as that can raise suspicionsor make people wonder if you have a mysterious ailment.Stay completely off company systemsWhile a phone or video interview might be another way to avoid too many meetings, make sure you plan those offsite, rather than in a conference room at your office. Theres too much risk that someone might pop their head in to greet you, and youll be distracted by the need to stay covert. And dont ever use your work computer, much less your work email, for job hunting. Your employer might be reading communications even if you are unaware, and it could be a violation of company policy to use any equipment for personal uses. Finally, dont check out just yetEven if you have a wandering eye, remember who is still signing your paycheck - and that the grass might not actually be greener. So, maintain your focus on your c urrent work, and who knows a new opportunity or salary bump may pop up right where you are.

This is the one thing all billionaires have in common

This is the one thing all billionaires have in commonThis is the one thing all billionaires have in commonIt is admittedly, at least a little counter-intuitive to rigidly adopt the characteristics of the fiscal elite in an attempt to mimic their achievements. History has proven that success, of any kind, to be largely sympathetic to risks and more than a pinch of luck.Nevertheless, there are certain reoccurring themes that marry the origin stories of the exceedingly wealthy that simply cannot be overlooked.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreClairvoyanceCreativity and work ethic seem to appear the fruchtwein frequently in the billionaire narrative. Innovation is the most powerful currency there is an intuitive comprehension of an omnipresent problem facing society, and the determination to perfect a solution. As it relates to wealth accumulation, the aforementioned problem has many faces. Wu Yajun, for instance, made a dramatic leap from poverty to billions via the founding of a successful real estate company in the early nineties, while JK Rowling did the same by tapping into a burgeoning literary trend. Ingenuity yokes both of these rags to riches tales. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk all flag similar circumstances.Imagination isnt particular to eureka moments, sometimes all it takes is a relevant- informed contribution.Perhaps the most dispiriting ingredient integral to successfully determining industry trends, belongs to ideations unexplainable, i.e. gut feelings. A kitten overcoming cubicle barriers is your Monday office inspiration

A kitten overcoming cubicle barriers is your Monday office inspiration A kitten overcoming cubicle barriers is your Monday office inspiration Mondays: the days when all of Sunday’s late-night worries crystallize and become real: the growing to-do list, the non-stop meetings, the projects due. Mondays are even more intense after Daylight Saving Time, when we are all more likely to feel like sleepy, hungry, cranky infants. On days like this, we need inspiration. Here is your antidote: a kitten that defies the odds and overcomes enormous physical barriers, to escape its limitations. It’s not easy, symbolizing the struggle each of us experiences when seeking autonomy in our careers. For a while, the furry seeker is stuck, flailing, between safety and the promise of freedom. The goal: escape to the promise of a better life.Just as the kitten nearly accomplishes its goal, there is a twist - one that teaches us all about the value of alliances in achieving our personal freedom. Thanks to financial commentator Josh Brown, the CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, who shared it with thousands of people, we can see this kitten’s stru ggle as a metaphor for office life.

5 ways to make new friends as an adult

5 ways to make new friends as an adult 5 ways to make new friends as an adult Once we’re out of our twenties, opportunities to meet new people start to get thin on the ground. Caught up in work, family and all sorts of responsibilities, we’re suddenly too busy to find ourselves randomly running into new people who could enrich our social networks and become firm friends. The International Authority for Professional Coaching Mentoring is  the leading accreditation authority for professional coaches. Here, one of their accredited coaches, Iulia Dobre-Trifan, offers up 5 top tips on how to find and keep new friends even when you’re an adult:1. Find a home on social mediaIt doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert or an extrovert, if you’re popular or shy; there is a social media channel to suit your personality, full of like-minded people who came at the world in a similar way. So find out where your people hang out online and start building an authentic presence there, one that’ll help them see you as a kindred spirit.2. Practice your values, and regu larlyShared values bring us close to our friends and keep our friendships strong. So be true to your values and invest your time and energy in honoring them. Practice your hobbies, keep up your favorite sports routine, or tap into the cultural avenues of your choosing, and you’ll start to tune in with the other regulars. And that’s where you’ll find your future friends.3. Offer your authentic appreciationWhenever you see someone achieving something impressive or making progress towards a goal you genuinely appreciate, take the opportunity to show your appreciation. Whether they’re a new person, a relative, a colleague, an acquaintance, it doesn’t matter - if they’re getting involved in something that you find beautiful and worthy, offering them your sincere recognition can open up the way for a new friendship.4. Look at your past from a fresh perspectiveWe sometimes run into people we drifted away from, not because we didn’t like them, but because that’s what happens as our lives diverge. Don’t pass up the opportunity to rediscover an old friendship; if you run into someone you remember fondly, put the effort into a proper catch-up and find out what you still share today. You might be surprised how well you get on!5. Travel … a lot! We’re lucky to live at a time when traveling is easier than ever before. It’s also a delightful way for you to make new friends, as well as new ideas and opportunities from different cultures and ways of living. It could be the hosts you encounter, or other tourists, or perhaps the people you travel with, but exploring nature and civilization all over this wonderful planet can help you make some of the best friends you’ll ever have. This article was originally published on Your Coffee Break.

This is Shake Shack founder Danny Meyers one big tip on how to handle clients

This is Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer's one big tip on how to handle clients This is Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer's one big tip on how to handle clients He made round-the-block lines for  a hamburger and fries seem completely normal, was out front on a smoking ban and a tipping ban, and has  used his customer-centric hospitality philosophy to run 15 different restaurants under his Union Square Hospitality Group empire. But Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer’s advice is as relevant for the boardroom as it is for the kitchen.Like all successful businesses, the hospitality industry is founded on the idea that happy customers need more than the product you’re trying to sell; they also need a good experience you’re providing along with that product if you want them to return. And as Meyer explained to Anderson Cooper on a recent  â€œ60 Minutes” segment, he adheres to a number of business philosophies that help his staff - and could help you - in every client interaction. To succeed with clients, figure out who’s the boss“There’s no question in my mind that at every single table there’s somebody who’s got the biggest agenda,â € Meyer told Cooper. “If it’s two people doing business, there’s someone who’s trying to sell something to somebody else. And I think that if you can figure that out early on in the meal, and understand what is it gonna take for the boss to leave happy. It could be make sure that someone else gets to pick the wine.”Meyer said identifying the boss as someone with “the biggest agenda” reminds us that the person you need to make feel like a boss may not actually hold the title. But to win in restaurants or in office meetings, you need to make your client feel like one.Make people feel special“Everyone on Earth is walking around life wearing an invisible sign that says, ‘Make me feel important.’ And your job is to understand the size of the font of this invisible sign and how brightly it’s lit,” Meyer explained.“So make me feel important by leaving me alone. Make me feel important by letting me tell you everything I know about food. So it’s our job to read t hat sign and to deliver the experience that that person needs,” he said.To figure out who needs to feel important for you to get your desired outcome, Meyer believes it’s your job to use empathy and intuition to figure what people want - and how to give it to them. The challenge is that everyone has different wants, and they’re not always good at communicating them.Don’t be afraid to go it aloneVisionary ideas are, by their definition, something no one else is doing. Meyer, who pioneered no-smoking bans in his NYC restaurants years ahead before the policy became law, knows this. Meyer said that to succeed, you have to be okay with standing alone with your idea and doing it anyway. Even if standing alone means pioneering a no-tipping movement, in order to balance the compensation for wait staff as well as kitchen workers, and seeing that no-tipping movement trigger a backlash that includes a class-action lawsuit by customers.“For me, it’s almost immaterial who’s doing it besides us. What matters is that we’re doing it. It could be that we’re slightly ahead of our time. But we’re in it to win this thing,” Meyer said about his decision to eliminate smoking and tipping in his restaurants.Any good reward requires some sort of risk. If you want to take your idea to the next level, like Meyer has done, you’ll have to be prepared for the pushback your idea will receive.

How To Identify And Embed Your Company Culture To Grow Your Business

How To Identify And Embed Your Company Culture To Grow Your Business How To Identify And Embed Your Company Culture To Grow Your Business Do you know what makes your company tick and what makes it unique? Do you and your team truly live the culture and values of your business? Is your team working smoothly, without having conflicts? If the answer’s a ‘’No’’ to any of these questions, it’s a good idea to think about what to change in order to answer ‘’Yes’’. In his study, Professor Noam Wasserman looked at 6500 failed businesses. 65% of those failed as a result of co: Our value is ‘’teamwork’’, then the expected behavior is the team always comes first. The interview question is: ‘’When last did you take one for the team?, How did it feel and what happened?’’ When you ask each candidate this question, you’ll be able to score them against those answers afterwards. The values based hiring process is the missing piece in many companies at the moment. And it’s the best way to ensure that candidate matches your values. Another thing that most companies dont do very well is the onboardi ng process. After the candidate joins the company, it’s important to help them hit the ground running and be productive from day one. Some companies invest in training and dump a lot of information on the new hires. The best companies, help the new joiner develop relationships within the company as the first step. They have a buddy system which helps the new joiner work out what the real issues in the company and in their role are, and who are the most important people. So they use a bit of training, but the focus is on relationships, because relationships create trust. And trust allows teammates to work well together.6. How can companies measure their company culture?Measuring company culture is quite hard because for most companies it is an invisible and subconscious liability versus a tangible measurable asset. You can do surveys on employee engagement but this is a snapshot of time and employee engagement is only a small piece of the culture puzzle. Ask yourselves the followin g questions to evaluate the strength of your company culture.  Are we able to hire the right A+ candidates who fit with the company’s culture?  Are those candidates approaching us?    Do we have low staff turnover?  Does the leadership team have more energy and time available to work on the business rather than in the business?  How strong are the bonds between team members?  Do we have a happier workplace environment, with fewer sick days, lower stress levels and more respectful communication?  Do our people take personal responsibility for results?  Is there more autonomy, healthier intra- and inter-team dynamics, less conflict, less need for mediation in our company?  Does everyone pull in the same direction during times of hardship for the company?  Do we have highly engaged employees who happily invest their discretionary energy back into the company?  Is there a values match, meaning that for our people, it is more than “just a job”: it is self-development?  Ca n we demonstrate that we have improved happiness and job satisfaction?Back to you!Defining your company values and then company culture is something that can’t happen overnight. Investing the time into it, though, can have a positive impact on both employees and the future of your company. As the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb said:  [clickToTweet tweet=#CompanyCulture is the foundation for future innovation. An #entrepreneurs job is to build the foundation. @bchesky quote=A companys culture is the foundation for future innovation. An entrepreneurs job is to build the foundation. ]  Keep it in mind.In case you have any more questions, let us know in the comments below. 10 Steps to Better Employee Benefit Marketing

10 Steps to Better Employee Benefit Marketing 10 Steps to Better Employee Benefit Marketing Each year, organizations look for creative and effective ways to promote their group employee benefit offerings. It has become critical in a time when individuals are faced with comparing their workplace benefits with those offered on the open marketplace. Without adequate participation in group health coverage, companies cannot offer the kind of cost savings that they are expected to. Add to this the state of the job market as it stands currently. There are many skill shortages, which makes it easier for employees to hop from one job to another where they may receive better compensation and benefits. Companies need to make employee benefit marketing a priority in order to attract and retain their best employees.   Employee benefit premiums are on the rise, again: According to the Society for Human Resource Management, 2017 health premium costs rise at least 6 percent over 2016’s figures. Since the Affordable Care Act, premiums have nearly doubled. Many employers now offer only high deductible health care plans that offer low premiums, but have annual deductibles of $4,000 per member or more. It can be hard to sell employees on this type of plan, unless some serious marketing takes place that can show it’s value.   10 Critical Things You Must Do When Marketing Employee Benefits Here are some time-tested ways to improve your employee benefit marketing results, while increasing awareness and the perceived value of benefits for your workforce. Use as many of them as possible to keep your employees from shopping around for benefits elsewhere.   1. Make Benefits a Part of Overall Employee Compensation Communication Companies often limit their benefit discussions to when they introduce them to new hires. Or they keep them separate from other forms of compensation. However, this doesnt give employees the full impact of their total compensation. Use employee benefits as one of many perks and benefits of working with your company, added alongside salary and special incentives that are offered to employees. This enhances the perceived value.   2. Create Marketing Materials That Speak to the Needs of Employees Smart marketing professionals address the “why” of offerings, which helps to increase the likelihood of conversion and sales. Use this same tactic when presenting employee benefits to employees and candidates. The marketing materials must address the needs of individuals. For example, one individual may be looking for flexible benefits that grow as he or she starts a family. Presenting the benefits in this way can help them make the decision to enroll.   3. Develop Marketing That Covers All Media Formats   We live in a multi-media rich world. Smart Insights, a marketing firm that monitors consumer electronics usage, indicated that as of 2017, the use of mobile devices has exceeded that of desktop computers. More employees are looking to their benefits information on the go, and need clear messaging to encourage them to enroll and use these benefits.  When sending out employee benefits communication it is important to use the right medium. Email can be good, but to reach individuals by phone, early mornings are the best; by tablet and online use late afternoon and evening messages.   4. Convey Positive Messaging Around Benefit Use   The entire idea of reading through employee benefit plan documents and trying to decide which coverage to accept is not all that appealing to most people. When marketing benefits it’s important to be as positive as possible. Make the benefits options about giving employees more control over their health care, their money, and their lives.   5. Share Employee Success Stories as Part of Marketing Campaigns One great way to increase the positive nature of the marketing around employee benefits is by allowing employees to share their testimonials with peers. This can be as simple as a written experience of using the benefits for a specific need, or a video created of their story. No one has to be perfect about this, just keep things natural and encourage employees to be honest. This can be the catalyst for getting other employees onboard.   6. Provide More Than Just Information About Employee Benefits All benefits come with the standard explanation of benefits sheet, but you want to share something more meaningful. Develop a directory of health care centers and an orientation to the benefits program. Use a presentation that can be delivered to employees annually before open enrollment, during new hire onboarding sessions, and to simply educate employees about the benefits your company offers. Give out magnets that have the benefit administrators’ information and the 24/7 hour nurse hotline.   7. Enlist the Support of Benefit Plan Administrators Most plan administrators have access to massive amounts of marketing materials that can augment your current efforts. From flyers and folders to corporate swagger (t-shirts, hats, pens, etc.) there are many things that the company can share with your employees if you just ask. Invite your employee benefits rep to an annual health and wellness fair for even more fun.   8. Conduct Regular Analysis of Employee Benefit Usage   As a standard practice, all employee benefits plan managers need to be evaluating the use of benefits as they pertain to employees. There are some benefits that are not worth offering because employees simply do not use them. Conduct a survey at the start of each year asking what benefits are most desired and what are never used. Eliminate those that are no longer needed and replace them with something better.   9. Turn Employees Into Brand and Benefit Ambassadors   Every year, especially before open enrollment periods, it’s time to get the entire workforce excited about benefits. Gather a committee of brand ambassadors who can share their experience with using the benefits, how claims were handled, information about local health care centers, and the discounts your company offers. Ask them to encourage their peers to participate in this year’s enrollment, and to share on company review sites how generous your company is.   10. Make Benefits Marketing a Year-Round Effort   While you may be reading this article now and thinking about a few ways to boost the marketing of your employee benefits, this isnt something that should just happen once in a while. Companies that have a reputation for taking good care of employees get there by marketing and promoting their benefits all year long. Create a compensation statement that can be downloaded by employees at an time. Remind employees to connect with the HR office anytime they have a question or need benefit support.   These efforts can help your company stand out as a leader in terms of compensation and benefits.

Heres how you can prime your thinking for success

Here's how you can prime your thinking for success Here's how you can prime your thinking for success The motivational speaker tells you success is easy. Just hustle more, visualize yourself succeeding, and really want it.Your parents tell you to play it safe. Dreams are risky business - best left for people who are already rich and connected. “Welcome to the real world,” dad grumbles. It’s the tension as old as time - the naïve optimist versus the hesitant pessimist. When these two mentalities butt heads, as they’re seemingly obligated to do, which should you listen to? Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Is there a middle ground? These are crucial questions because how you think impacts your choices. And your choices over time play a huge part in whether you succeed or fail.Let’s examine both worldviews more closely. The Optimist tells you anything is possible. Your goals, even the big ones you dream about - but never mention - are well within your potential. The Optimist is right. The Pessimist tells you the path looks steep and difficult. You’re likely to start slow, fail often, and you’ll have to improve your skills to overcome the challenges you’ll face. The Pessimist is right. The key is finding balanceIf you want to reach your goals as a leader, entrepreneur, blogger or writer, both optimism and pessimism are indispensable points of view.Optimism without pessimism is a recipe for disappointment. Success demands hard work. When goals go unmet and progress seems microscopic, the Optimist will be shocked and dismayed, tempted to give up.Pessimism without optimism is a recipe for regret. Success is doable. By never trying, Pessimists never fail, but they also never succeed at the goals they dream about.Optimists and Pessimists are roadkill lining the path to success. But when these two points of view make a baby, a powerful mindset is born.Of course, I’m talking about realism, but what is a Realist? Much like “activist” or “expert,” the title is often claimed by people who don’t deserve it - generally pessimists in disguise. The goal of realism is to see things as they truly are.The Realist knows success is possible and opportunity is everywhere, which gives her the courage to try new things. She also knows big goals, such as launching a business or writing a book, require hard work, which prepares her to endure setbacks and disappointments.Memorize these 4 thoughts to strengthen the healthy balance of realism in your thinking: I won’t be good at most things on the first try, but I can improve at almost anything through purposeful practice. I’m likely to start slow on my journey to success, but that’s normal. I can choose to press on. The experts I admire walked the exact same path and emerged victorious. Because I’m a unique human being, certain steps will be harder for me than for someone else, but that’s not bad. Everyone has areas of weakness, including the experts I admire. I also have areas of strength, where I’ll enjoy a head start. Normal people accomplish amazing things every day, and they do it by working hard, learning from their mistakes, and persevering through setbacks. ConclusionOptimism without pessimism is a recipe for disappointment. Pessimism without optimism is a recipe for regret. When you catch yourself leaning too far in either direction, regain your balance. See success for what it is …Available. Doable. Hard. Frustrating. Fun. Energizing. Tiring. Discouraging. Humbling. Time-consuming. Empowering. Transformational.Want to go deeper?Do you have big goals you long to achieve? The new important work leave caring for a sick relative

The new important work leave caring for a sick relative The new important work leave caring for a sick relative While many kinds of work leave get more attention - maternity leave, sick leave, even pawternity leave - there is one kind that is becoming pervasive but unacknowledged: leave for a sick relative.Inevitably the day comes at work when you immediately have a decision to make: take time off to care for your relative, or continue to work while someone else tends to them? The Pew Research Center released an article  last week saying that 23% of Americans reported having taken “leave from work to care for a family member with a serious health condition. An additional one-in-four say that if this hasn’t happened to them already, it’s at least somewhat likely that it will in the future.”The article  also points out that “among adults who were employed in the past two years,” 11% left  to care for an ill relative, compared to 7% who left work after a birth or adoption, according to a separate Pew Research Center study  from 2017.If you want to leave work when a loved one is reall y ill, your decision to do so will depend on both the law and maybe even how you think you’ll be perceived when you do.The Family and Medical Leave Act covers only some sicknessesThe law doesn’t cover all leave, so employers have a wide berth. The Family and Medical Leave Act lumps together taking time off work to tend to  â€œan immediate family member” who has “a serious health condition,” an employee’s newborn baby, adoption and foster care processes, and  â€œmedical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition,”  according to the United States Department of Labor. If a worker is covered by the law,  he or she will have “up to 2 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave” each year, during which “group health benefits” must stay in place. The FMLA applies to all public institutions, “all public and private elementary and secondary schools,” and companies that have at least 50 workers, but employees also have to meet specific cri teria. But  FMLA applies to serious conditions only, usually involving hospitalization - a parent requiring a child’s cold will still have to take a vacation day or a sick day.A bill to amend the FMLA to allow time off from work after the death of a son or daughter  was introduced in the House of Representatives on March 16.The Society for Human Resource Management reported that the bill would  give a parent who has lost a child up to 12 weeks off.Bosses think less of employees who take family leaveUnfortunately, taking time off for family could send an unwanted message to your employer.A 2013 article in Journal of Social Issues shed light on how men may be interpreted when asking for family leave in a study of 371 people. The  researchers cited the 2000 book “Unbending gender: Why family and work conflict and what to do about it”  by Joan Williams when discussing “flexibility stigma”  in the text. This is a term for “a type of discrimination triggered whenever an employ ee signals a need for workplace flexibility due to family responsibilities (e.g., by requesting leaves of absence or flexible hours),” the article said. The researchers found that  men seeking to take time off for family matters aren’t always taken seriously.“The present research supported our prediction that men who ask for family leave are feminized for “acting like a woman” and economically punished as a result. They are also stigmatized as poor workers…which had direct effects on their eligibility for rewards,” the research article  says. The fear of losing your job definitely plays a role in the decision to take family leave. The Pew Research Center report released yesterday said that “62% of family-leave takers who came back to work earlier than they would have liked say they thought they might risk losing their job if they took more time off. Only 37% of maternity- and paternity-leave takers say the same.”Will those factors matter when a close relative is very sick? Probably not; many people would choose family over work in those situations. Nonetheless, leaving work to care for someone you love, and who is in grave condition is a big life decision- both professionally and emotionally.
